Let's celebrate Ella's legacy of songs! Ella sang everything. Every kind of music. She started out as a Big Band Singer, hitting the charts with the popular tunes of the thirties and forties. She sang Jazz from the beginning, using her voice like one of the instruments in the band.
Welcome to our Jazz Page
Ella was the greatest female interpreter of American Popular Song, winning an awful lot of Grammy Awards for her beloved Songbook albums.
But Ella herself would have told you that singing Jazz was her favorite. So here we go with a brief look at how the Foundation stays involved in the world of Jazz and Jazz/Music education. There are three sections below, we hope you enjoy them all.
Jazz Appreciation Month
Every April. EVERYWHERE
Back in 2002, the Smithsonian Institution kicked off the very first Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) in Washington DC. We are proud to be the Founding Funder. We love the idea of spreading the joy of Jazz, America's very own music. Now JAM is celebrated all around the world and the United Nations has designated April 30 as "International Jazz Day". And of course, April 25 is Ella's birthday...
Check back with us in early Spring for tons of ideas on how to join in the JAM fun. Meanwhile, lots of information can be found at the official Jazz Appreciation Month website www.smithsonianjazz.org

JAZZ AND MUSIC PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN
I took a look the other day, and found that the majority of our grants go to support programs that bring children and music together. And FAMILIES and music, too. Bet you're not surprised by that. Music really, truly does bring families together, it seems to be a universal language that spans generations. In addition, many studies show that children who learn music do much better in school. No wonder we love the programs mentioned below!
